The artist Peng I-I believes that art and life should be closely integrated, and he emphasizes the functionality of his works. He found that near his studio there were many houses built with “rammed earth.” Fascinated by the building materials used during old traditional times, he began to think about how the techniques could be continued. Considering rammed earth as a frame always connected to the ground, Peng I-I used four round white rods to erect a rammed earth-shaped lamp base. The lampshade is composed of 32 interlaced pieces of red copper and brass. The lamplight is subdued as it emerges through the metal gaps. The two “clouds” floating above are separately made of wood and clear glass. As the light projects upward from within, the umbrella-shaped lampshade gives the illusion of floating in air. The work is titled Armor (or in Chinese, Dou 兜) because the character has a very similar structure.
