The artist Wu Yung Chieh developed her “Close to the Other Side” series by focusing on the motif of her demolished childhood home and expressing her inner feelings about the sudden disappearance of familiar things through the visual tension of painting. She was born in a military dependents’ village, but later on happened to discover that this village, where she had lived as a child, had become a flat parcel of land overgrown with weeds. She could not find the location of her childhood home even if she wanted to. In Close to the Other Side—Scavenging no. 1, she deliberately used “artificial” or fluorescent colors to show how the products of the information industry affect modern people’s visual habits. In addition, she interprets the feelings of desolation and nostalgic wandering with a borderless, fluid composition and layers of paint. The elliptical shape suggests the mood of traditional Chinese bird and flower paintings. In the blank space, colorful flowers still grow out, expressing a place that is strange and isolated, though still beautiful and full of memories.
