Hsu Wen-Ti’s Work in Progress comprises four small paintings depicting four different interior spaces. The walls are covered with colorful wallpaper, and two of the rooms are set with tables, chairs, and sofas, but each room has something unexpected: cement, pipes, and brick walls that should be hidden behind the decoration appear, as if the people who built them were careless. Hsu believes that “truth is built in process, but often hidden under glittery appearances.” She chooses to bring these incompletely decorated rooms back before the viewer, because they show the neglected processes of their making. In the third painting here, the artist deliberately made very low grid-like reliefs on the surface of the yellow wall; these feel like the bricks before they are plastered and painted over.
