People have always loved and feared nature. On the one hand, they wall off nature to keep it outside, while on the other hand, they will open the window to look at the scenery outside. This delicate relationship is fully revealed through the brush of artist Hsu Wen-Ti. In her work, The View from This Window, there is a double bed in a room and huge floor-to-ceiling windows that make the space seem open and free, but the off-white wall reminds the audience that this is still an indoor, walled-in, and protected environment. To highlight the tension and the contradiction between the indoor and outdoor spaces, she deliberately breaks their limiting boundaries, for example, with the picture of a baseball player above the bed: the bat he is holding swings out of the frame. In addition, to express the spatial ambiguity, she cut two holes into the painting where baseballs presumably smashed through the windows, and the holes become passages that connect the painted world with the real world.
