You Shen Yu’s works often feature clouds and mists. For him, clouds and fog are visually changeable, flexible, and free; they can be all-encompassing or show all kinds of colors. In his Artificial Cloud No. 2, clouds and mist float above some liquid in a glass beaker. It is still unpredictable and full of vitality, though. Through multi-layered tonal changes, the artist captures the fluid, ever-changing nature of the clouds and mists. For the artist, clouds and mists represent a special kind of existence, because they are familiar but unusual, always changing their appearance, never being able to be pinned down or given a single definition, and they remain this way despite our penchant to label everything. In his depictions of clouds and mists, he puts them in entirely different surroundings, which gives them new meaning and lets us escape from our habitual perspectives.
