In You Shen Yu’s “Artificial Cloud” series, clouds and mists are removed from nature and placed in artificial spaces, and by this movement and transformation, accustomed views are overturned. The focus is the cloud in the Erlenmeyer flask, the transparent hardness of which strongly contrasts with the opaque, diffuse cloud. The cool colors and flask make it look like a laboratory scene. For the artist, thoughts are like clouds, free and infinitely changing. However, in an era that demands speed and complexity, everyone inevitably becomes a subject of one or another social experiment, and subject to the constraints of various norms and controls within a certain framework. Although the cloud in the painting occupies a limited space, it still floats. The artist is trying to convey the idea that as long as we continue to evolve and change, we always have the possibility of transcending limitations.
