The artist Lai Yueh-Hung is adept at using the “piecing together” to express spatial layers and create optical illusions. In his work, Node, two straight roads floating in air intersect to form an X across the canvas and divide it into four sections. There is a white relay station at the intersection, and a line of seven mysterious dwarves outside the station, either welcoming or sending off the astronaut who faces them, waving a yellow flag. In the background, the artist uses an aerial perspective to depict the image of a river meandering through a flat, partly green land. The river’s surface and the body of water it flows into are like mirrors, reflecting the boundless universe, its eclipsing orbs, nebulas, and other images from space. Lai Yueh-Hung thus creates three different levels of space: the floating roads, the ground below, and outer space above or behind the viewer. The fine details will arouse viewers’ curiosity and cause them to focus on the beauty of each element in the scene.
