In this painting, there are three settlements: the one on the left is an ancient house inspired by traditional Taiwanese architecture, the large building in the middle is an aircraft carrier, and the one on the right is a skyscraper that looks like a tree trunk. Lin Shu-Kai, the artist, designed this with a three-in-one concept: the three settlements represent the past, present, and future of a city. He allows civilizations from different times to coexist in the composition, making it possible for the three to talk with one another. The contrasting yellow and blue areas in the painting, as well as the low-saturation black and white lines, convey Lin Shu-Kai’s philosophy that everything in the human world is “one body with two sides.” Human civilization has developed in linear time, but Lin breaks the rules by presenting them together, deconstructing past and present, and reshaping the imagination of the future.
