Lin Shu-Kai lives in his hometown Tainan. He draws inspiration from this old capital, full of temples and twisting alleyways, and his creativity has been nurtured through his having internalized his visual and spatial experiences of Tainan. This work is part of his “The Balcony City Civilization Series,” which is derived from his own experiences of urban renewal as well as the traditional woodcut mold imagery left over from his father’s factory, and some mysterious-looking architecture. He took apart and rebuilt various buildings around the world to create organic urban images that look familiar, yet surreal. This fantasy city is a stage where the past, present, and future coexist. It is covered with slender totems. There are symbols of various civilizations hidden in it, which show the connection and reproduction of personal life experience, memory, and history, somewhere between the real and the virtual.
