The “Balcony City Civilization” series of works have been developing since 2012. As Lin Shu-Kai travels to different countries to participate in exhibitions and accumulates experience living in villages in different places overseas, the elements he brings into his works have become more diversified, and they continue to change and grow. The creative background to The Old Stilt House Migrated to the Other Side is based on the experiences Lin exchanges while living in central Vietnam. He saw the stilt houses erected in the farmland of central Vietnam, and then thought of the small temples to the local soil-ground gods in rural areas of Taiwan, where many people will worship. The arrangement of buildings in the pictures spreads outward from the round center, which symbolizes the relationship between the individual and the environment. The image of the stilt house has been dismantled and reorganized, combined with the mysterious totems of various ancient civilizations. These elements allow his works to break away from regional descriptions and move towards a more general experience of human civilization, while giving the viewers more fertile space for their own imagination.
