Tainan’s West Central District, where the artist Chung Yi-Hua lives, is not only the oldest section within the old capital, but also the capital for his constant muse. He often rides a tricycle through the alleys at a slow, comfortable speed, capturing Tainan’s street scenes. The French master of pointillism Seurat arranged his color dots in a scientific, analytical way, but Chung mixes the colors of his dots on the palette, then arranges them in orderly, geometric ways. The appropriate arrangement on the canvas gives the work a unique texture. The space seems flat, but the elastic spacing and placement of the color blocks creates perspective and an interesting three-dimensional space. The Tainan seen in Chung’s works is always full of wonderful detail, whether it is the colorful tiles in the alleys, ditch covers, or plants creeping over old buildings.
