作品賞析
Chung Yi-Hua, who grew up in Yangon, Burma, chose to renounce his Burmese nationality and come to Taiwan at the age of 23 because of anti-Chinese sentiments in Burma. He found the sunshine of his old home in southern Taiwan. Riding a three-wheeler through the streets and alleys of Tainan, he recorded the sunshine, warmth, and memories of Tainan. When he saw the beautiful scene of Meishan in Chiayi, he was deeply moved and chose to use the pointillist technique to give Meishan a different vitality. Chung’s pointillist composition differs from Seurat’s, which was based on a scientific analysis of color, and it offers the intuitive color experience of the East. He framed the outline with very fine cloth tape, then finally tore it off to leave the outline on the canvas. This technique is somewhat analogous to the dyeing and dewaxing process of Nanyang batik. Perhaps this immigrant’s memories of Southeast Asia were somehow transformed into the fine wispy dots on the canvas. Behind the concrete representation of Meishan in this painting is interwoven with Nanyang aesthetics at the subconcious level.
