The artist Chao Shu-Jung is good at using photography and sound as creative media. Her work, Reminiscent, is a video made when she was artist-in-residence in a military dependents’ village, Hsien-Kuang 2nd Village, in Taoyuan. She shot a large number of photographs and videos of village scenes, interviewed former residents, recorded sounds from within the village, and edited the various elements together into this work. During the creative process, she also invited residents and friends to do sound recordings of military songs, folk songs, nursery rhymes, recordings of speech tinged with various provincial accents, and recitations. The work starts from the military village’s dilapidated walls, and passes through buildings, doors, and windows. The walls, set close by banyan trees and swing sets, display posters unique to military dependents’ villages. Through her fieldwork, Chao gathers images that vividly present the unique memories and culture of the military village, and her work is like a time capsule preserving the history of Taiwan’s military dependents’ villages.
