The Floating Cities

CHAO Shu-Jung uses the perspective of a foreigner to reflect upon the relationship between the land and its people. Sound and videos were employed to evoke nostalgia while investigating topics such as global climate change and self-identity during the artist’s travels. The Floating Cities is based upon 2 cities important to the artist’s life, namely Saint-Denis in France and Taipei in Taiwan, allowing the two locations to interact with each other in the animation. The video shows the new Taipei Station, old Taipei Station, and the abandoned train station of Saint-Denis being displaced from their locations following a sudden and powerful geological action before meeting and melding into one another. The background sounds were based upon public broadcasts recorded at the stations.
