Most of Hsu Wen-Te’s artworks are ink paintings that depict complex scenery with delicate brushstrokes; his unique palette make the paintings more layered, fresh, and ethereal. Common themes are calm, rural scenery, the chill autumn and winter seasons, elegantly slender reeds, and tranquil riverbanks. His The Reeds Know of Autumn’s Arrival shows a lakeshore scene in early autumn. Night descends, and a silvery gleam is reflected from the blue water’s surface. The vitality of the light yellow reeds are expressed with neat, powerful lines, and their “flags” sway to the right, as if a light autumn breeze is blowing. Two geese search for food among the reeds, and another descends from above, as if looking for a place to rest at night. The cool colors suggest the gradual cooling of the season and bleak atmosphere.
