HSU Wen-Te’s ink painting Amidst the Reeds portray silver grass swaying by the pond in the breezes of autumn. The artist first used fine brushes to outline long, slender reeds swaying in the wind, and used back-coloring techniques to create ink tones of varying densities to differentiate the background and foreground, creating a scene of overgrown reeds. Yet the intense visuals do not lack details. A few egrets are hiding within the reeds, snuggling against each other to seek warmth in the drizzling rain and cold winds. The cold, picturesque atmosphere makes viewers feel as though they’re witnessing the yellowish tones, gentle winds, and flowing streams of silvery plumes of autumn even though the entire work is created in meerly black and white.
