Traditional landscape painting expresses the scenery that the painter sees or imagines—it is the creator’s expression as a literary person. However, the artist Chen Li-Ying has overturned the traditional concept and attempts to create from the point of view of the machine. In ancient landscape painting, the limitations of technology meant that many of the perspectives that were used had to be imagined. However, Chen Li-Ying’s landscape paintings, which are done by referring to Google Map 3D, have subverted this concept. Modern technology allows us to grasp every detail of a landscape, so the relationship between humans and nature has changed. The artist uses many of the same creative forms found in traditional landscape paintings, but the meanings contained in the resulting images are quite different. By this means, Chen examines the concepts and meanings of contemporary landscape creation and allows viewers to feel the insignificance of human beings relative to the magnificence of nature.
