Lai Yu-Cheng’s artworks often present bright, gorgeous colors, and he applies the various techniques from realism, surrealism, abstract art, and quasi-abstract art to explore real feelings under all the splendor. His works go from recording life and expressing ideas on environmental issues to presenting things with spiritual connotations, and through a wide range of topics and a variety of techniques, they provide viewers with different visual effects. Hot Summer is one of the paintings in Lai Yu-Cheng’s “Four Seasons” series. Long horizontal strips of various colors—red, yellow, green, blue, and so on—look like torn pieces of paper or TV static, but they still seem to follow a fixed rhythm, just like the turning of the four seasons. Flowers may bloom and fade, but even so, nature’s rhythms cannot be unvarying for eternity. With this painting, Lai Yu-Cheng remembers family members who have passed away, and expresses his feelings on losing loved ones—the painting is an expression of feelings of helplessness in the face of life’s impermanence.
