LAI Yu-Cheng uses art to project images that reflect the absurdity of modernity, the vicious cycle brought about by the depletion of ecological resources, and the chain of environmental events that happen afterwards. The resulting artworks compel viewers to reflect upon environmental destruction behind the well-packaged beauty of modern lifestyles. Taoliving-Light Stone No.1 shows rectangular bluish-purple blocks that represent skyscrapers against a lush, green lawn. The pollution generated caused abstract rivers and mountains to assume a coat of fantastical colors. The sun and moon have lost all sense of time and simultaneously, fish struggle to breathe in the drying lakes. Horses and birds, now deprived of their habitat, can only look on helplessly, as airplanes flying across the sky symbolize the drastic changes brought about by the forces of development.
