The Dream of Our Time 7—Ximending records the artist Witkin WU’s experience of the atmosphere of our time while interacting with the city. It is set in the lively neighborhood of Ximending. The surrounding high-rise buildings are expressed with lines and a large number of color blocks that bring out the prosperity of this urban landscape. The people walking through it, however, seem to be covered with a negative filter and have blue faces that display a sense of coldness. The faces in front are even cut into incomplete likenesses. Some of the clouds above appear unusually black. Witkin WU uses such methods to capture the passage of time in the city, and to show how people are constrained by their fast, noisy external environment. At first glance, the people in the painting are shopping, but their expressions are withdrawn and empty. Does this imply that our bodies and minds are gradually losing their sensibility in the fast-moving, information-filled city?
