The artist Wong Gon-Jer’s creations begin from inner life experiences, while at the same time, they embody the contexts of Western abstract expression and the ink-and-brush of the East. Wong uses the medium of oil painting to show the far-reaching, even transcendent conceptual realms of ink painting, and he continues to explore the possibilities of existence between concrete and abstract painting. His “Life’s Consciousness of Time” series of works are inspired by the image of “plant growth.” Wong Gon-Jer is moved by the cyclic, unceasing vitality of plants, which he sublimates into the flowing, resonant dynamism of his works. This painting retains traces of freehand movement and measurement by ruler, as well as improvised brushstrokes similar to that of semi-automatic technique. These may seem to be random, but in fact, they have been rigorously and rationally thought through. This mental landscape woven together from sensibility and rationality conveys the infinity of time and space. It is delicately layered and may be savored time and again.
