WANG Wu uses block prints to duplicate the mindset of calligraphic brushstrokes, taking spiritual inspiration from folk art as well as traditional calligraphy and paintings. Buddha, Four Bodhisattvas and His Ten Disciples is inspired by Buddhist art and cave frescoes and presents the block print portraits of Buddha, the Bodhisattvas, and his disciples. Buddha himself is seated in the padmāsana (lotus seat) and is flanked by the four Bodhisattvas, namely Kṣitigarbha, Avalokiteśvara, Mañjuśrī, and Samantabhadra, while ten disciples with different forms, dharma names, and abilities are lined up in a row. WANG Wu uses simple lines in this in-depth study of the features of various characters to convey the essence and spirit of Buddhist culture.
