Wang Wu uses block prints to duplicate the mindset of calligraphic brushstrokes, taking spiritual inspiration from folk art as well as traditional calligraphy and paintings. An Old Pine features a pine tree, a common element featured in traditional paintings of people and landscapes. Pine, bamboo, and plums represent three winter trees and serve as the symbol of evergreen agelessness, purity, and chastity. The branches and leaves of the old pine composition are depicted with regular line patterns filled with harmony and vitality. The branches and trunk of the tree are covered by repeated patterns, while a number of end branches and twigs are already wilted, revealing the age of the tree. Wang Wu uses this work to depict the resilience of the pine tree.
