WANG Wu uses block prints to duplicate the mindset of calligraphic brushstrokes, taking spiritual inspiration from folk art as well as traditional calligraphy and paintings. A Walk in the Sea is a block print of a leaping fish with its mouth agape, whiskers extending forward, and fins spreading outward, as though the fish is flying along the surface of the ocean with great dynamism and energy. Fine wave lines present an image of the ocean in a simple and rustic atmosphere, while the fish represents a symbol of fortune and vitality commonly used in eastern folk traditions and art. WANG Wu hopes to depict the grandeur and majesty of life in a clean and optimistic spirit.
