WU Ming-Shen believes that sculpting is a form of three-dimensional calligraphy and a process for handling the existence of structure, and thus regards structure as a medium and a narrative tool. Through materials and imaginations, various possible combinations and variations are explored to evolve and advance the very nature of matter itself. “Transmutation” is an attempt to convey such a concept. Hard marble is sculpted to a seemingly soft, pliable material. The bends and folds prove that stone can be converted into another material to heighten the sense of uncertainty. To WU Ming-Shen, uncertainty represents a constant inquiry of the very nature of matter, and the pursuit of true ideal that can only happen through change.
