The sculptor WU Ming-Sheng started learning the art of stonecrafting and processing during high school and developed passionate love for the media. He adopted the spirit of modern art, challenging and experimenting with the very limits of stone sculpting. The creative inspiration for Mother of the Earth is derived from WU Ming-Sheng’s fantasies of our prehistoric era. A block of natural black granite is fashioned with clean, natural lines, portraying the contours of a kind, gentle mother and her loving warmth. Finely tuned curves and clever use of lighting generate starkly contrasted dimensional transformations and dynamic tensions. The work’s purity in color represents the sincerity of our emotions while its purity of form offers a rhythmic beauty. The dialog between natural materials and modern technique embodies mankind’s innermost emotional attachment and dependence on earth.
