LEE Kai-Chen’s An Autumn Afternoon depicts beautiful scenery of silver grass on Dadu Mountain swaying in the afternoon breeze. A warm, mellow orange hue is used to depict the unique red soils of Dadu Mountain as well as the soothing afternoon sunshine and atmosphere. The tiny silver grass flowers created using fine, white brush strokes stacked atop of each other are arranged in varying densities across the composition to depict the elegant undulating forms of the grasses in the wind while recreating the glistening, golden reflections they give off. The vast variety of life and nature is contrasted against the ephemeral and insignificant state of human lives. LEE Kai-Chen uses soft, gentle, and poetic brushstrokes as a means of paying a joyful yet morose homage to life and the natural world.
