The Old Plum

ZHENG Chong-Xiao’s works focus on themes of humanity, machines, and the environment. The classical landscape paintings of ancient literati are employed to investigate the mutual relationship between the development of civilization and the environment. The old plum is based upon the painting of the same name by the Japanese painter Kano Sansetsu, and recreates the painting in a modern and technologically advanced setting. A pouting boy is seen playing with a bicycle while others are seen controlling aircrafts. Machines, renewable energy, and flying devices are depicted as their best companions. ZHENG Chong-Xiao uses this visual transformation and interesting perspective to imagine the various possibilities of balanced technological and ecological progress.
