ZHENG Chong-Xiao’s works focus on themes of humanity, machines, and the environment. The classical landscape paintings of ancient literati are employed to investigate the mutual relationship between the development of civilization and the environment. Arctic is based upon the Wintry Groves in a Snow Landscape by the Song Dynasty painter Fan Kuan, and recreates the landscape painting in a modernized and technologically advanced setting. A pouting boy is admiring the landscape with a polar bear while others swim happily in the water, temporarily setting aside concerns regarding global warming and melting of the polar ice caps. ZHENG Chong-Xiao uses this visual transformation and interesting perspective to imagine the various possibilities of balanced technological and ecological progress.
