CHENG Chung-Hsiao’s Nintendo is one of the works from the 1987 Taiwan History Project series inspired by the Ray Huang’s 1587, a Year of No Significance. The series regarded the lifting of martial law in 1987 as a key turning point for Taiwanese politics, economy, and culture. CHENG Chung-Hsiao chose to portray the history of modern Taiwan through nearly 60 pieces of artworks, all of which have been created using rapid, flat painting techniques to generate color patches assembled to form characters sporting spiked hair, pouting lips, and red shorts who were then set against a Super Mario-themed background. This light-hearted and comical composition aims to connect and resonate with the viewers as they reminisce about the red and white Nintendo Family Computer that took the entire country by storm back in 1989.
