YANG Ya-Chi’s ink paintings often feature plants, using them as a subject to project emotions and reflections about life, the environment, and current events. Walk in Our Garden is a work inspired after walking in the garden with a friend. Although YANG Ya-Chi differed from her friend in terms of personality, the two complemented each other like the green chili peppers in the center of the painting. The wide range of conversation they had in the garden teeming with blooming and wilting flowers were the time she really treasured. YANG Ya-Chi’s friend passed away before the work could be completed, transforming the art into a memory and longing for a lost friend. The rigidly straight plant on the left side symbolizes her friend’s ascent to the heavens, while the right half assumed a more swirling growth, symbolizing her ongoing life journey.
