KAO I-Sheng’s ink painting Bone Umbrella II uses a black background to create a somber atmosphere. The man baring his upper body has a strange skin tone symbolizing his abnormal conditions. He holds an umbrella stripped to only its ribs, hinting at the loss of certain principles. A bird and a fruit tree, based upon the Bird Attracted to Ripe Fruit in Southern Song Dynasty, are placed at the left side of the composition to symbolize tradition and order. The earthen slopes in the distant symbolize either a tomb for creativity or tradition. KAO I-Sheng uses a fable-like language to convey his ideas on artistic creation and his desires and attempts to break free from the shackles.
