Driftwood－ The Streetlamp & The Sitter

KAO I-Sheng’s Driftwood－The Streetlamp & the Sitter is a collage made out of several fragments. In the center of the piece, several strips of driftwood are pieced together to form an organic entity, on top of which is a chunk of wood that seems to look straight at the viewer. Above, to either side, is the negative image of a street lamp. Using a collage technique, Kao rearranges driftwood into an organic entity imbued with its own life force, allowing a departed spirit to reappear in the image. By engaging in dialogue with the viewer, the artist and the viewer can exchange one another’s memories of life and culture.
