LAI Pei-Yu’s artworks investigate the symbols and words that saturate urban landscapes as well as how they connect with our memories and experiences. ●City-Taipei seems to be 6 panels of urban landscapes. In truth, however, the panels only display white circular dots arranged on a black background. These dots were used to simulate different types of urban lighting and were assembled to create the brilliant nightscapes of a city that never sleeps. Actual and complex urban landscapes were processed and reduced to this simple world composed only of abstract symbols. LAI Pei-Yu’s works show how complex urban landscapes look in a globalized and digital world. The entire image was dissected and reassembled in order to create an all-new urban scenery.
