LAI Pei-Yu’s artworks investigate the symbols and words that saturate urban landscapes as well as how they connect with our memories and experiences. ●City-TaipeiTokyo seemed to be showing brilliant urban nightscape, but closer inspection revealed that the image was composed entirely of circles of different sizes, each representing placards and advertisements that saturate the entire city. Each circular dot represents a piece of digital information, and was densely packed in a black and white composition. Somehow, this assemblage of abstract symbols emerged as a realistic urban landscape. LAI Pei-Yu’s works show how complex urban landscapes look in a globalized and digital world. The entire image was dissected and reassembled in order to create an all-new urban scenery.
