A Ship into the Port

SU Chih-Wei’s woodcuts often present unique local cultures and folk traditions in Taiwan. Ship into the Port shows a sky with overlapping patches of black, white, and blue and a giant merchant vessel docked against the pier. A man wearing a yellow hat sits on the pier while looking out towards the sea as a score of seagulls rest or flutter nearby. Buildings resting against the foot of the mountain and vessels entering and leaving the port depict the busy and rustic port. SU Chih-Wei employed a down-to-earth and easily understood composition to convey what life was like in early ports, giving a warm, nostalgic presentation of local cultures.
