SU Chih-Wei’s woodcuts often present unique local cultures and folk traditions in Taiwan. Zhong Kui provides a visual portrayal of the legendary character Zhong Kui from the Toaist faith who is also known as the High Emperor of Demon Taming tasked with exorcising and capturing wayward demons. The work depicted Zhong Kui with his fierce, tiger-like looks, dragon’s forehead, fish eyes, and a thick, angry beard. The Demon Tamer was dressed in the crimson robes and feathered crown of a high official, holding a sword in one hand and a fan in another. Next to the legend was an imp who held an umbrella as well as Emperor Gaozu of the Tang Dynasty. SU Chih-Wei’s works employ brightly colored lines and colors to depict the gravity and somber atmosphere of Zhong Kui’s tours as well as the spirit of Taiwanese folk religion.
