Pingtung

作品賞析

LI Pei-Shan’s Pingtung is named after Taiwan’s southernmost city and depicts a 1980-style theme park. Uniform rows of straight trees surround the park. The facilities include a pirate ship with suspect operability, regular and S-shaped water slides and pools, while aged fiberglass plastic statues of crocodiles and elephants are scattered throughout the area. The 30 years old theme park did not undergo major changes, and retained the simple rustic atmosphere of Taiwan in the 1980s. Yet time has rendered this scene into a surreal environment that seemed detached from real life, generating an odd atmosphere that viewers are strangely familiar with.
