LI Pei-Shan’s works are filled with non-sensical cuteness and humor. In The Crisis, the background is clearly delineated into bright blue and white portions. The blue symbolizes the clear sky while the white color invokes imaginations of snowy plains, generating the combined results of a clean and refreshing atmosphere. Several individuals illustrated in the painting are holding leaves and seem to be falling from the sky. Right in the middle of the picture is a swimming pool with a diving platform. A person sits by the pool admiring the mermaid swimming in the pool. On the left side of the picture, five men in swimming shorts are lying on the ground in a circle. These outrageous and irrational scenes have been arranged by LI Pei-Shan to create a surreal and comical atmosphere that hints at our isolation and pessimism.
