YANG Siang-Jen’s works reflect his observations and records on various items observed in everyday life. He believes that physical objects have their own language, thus adhering minute waste items to the canvas to preserve their traces upon the world. In Trace 04, YANG Siang-Jen takes waste memo slips and rubbed them onto the canvas, creating an orderly abstract composition. The color of the memo slips and that of charcoal are combined to form a richly layered effect, allowing viewers to contemplate the two disparate imageries of abstract art and actual items themselves. YANG Siang-Jen utilized a methodical and unemotional approach of taking mundane everyday items and converting them to abstract two-dimensional artworks, allowing viewers to reflect upon the different values of common items in our memories and when discarded.
