LIAO Chi-Hsiung studied watercolor painting with YANG Chi-Tung, and started generating realist oil paintings that portrayed sceneries that he had seen. Recently, LIAO Chi-Hsiung has attempted to use acrylic paint and hemp paper to generate simple yet meaningful work. The Insticntive Scale series portrayed sceneries that he had observed while traveling in various countries, using worn door posts, electric meters in the alleyways, advertisements on mailboxews, and other mundane everyday items as sources of creative inspiration. Instictive Scale (’06-2) employed gray as the basic color tone. Lage quantities of acryclic paint were employed to create intuitive lines and thick textures typical of oil paintings in order to recreate a tattered texture of a well-weathered wall. Materials are ripped and glued upon the canvas, and further decorated with graffiti to create an abstract presentation with particular emphasis on the signs of aging. To the artist, these signs offer a unique and incomplete aesthetics that also serve as measuring markings of time.
