LIAO Chi-Hsiung studied watercolor painting with YANG Chi-Tung, and started generating realist oil paintings that portrayed sceneries that he had seen. Recently, LIAO Chi-Hsiung has attempted to use acrylic paint and hemp paper to generate simple yet meaningful work. The Insticntive Scale series portrayed sceneries that he had observed while traveling in various countries, using worn door posts, electric meters in the alleyways, advertisements on mailboxews, and other mundane everyday items as sources of creative inspiration. Instinctive Scale (’11-9) employed simple coloring and design. The seemingly abstract image is inspired by worn meter boxes, door posts, and other weathered items combined with advertisements and posters that have been ripped, glued, sprayed upon, scraped, vandalized and then reassembled together upon the canvas to offer an alternative aesthetic of weathered destitution.
