LIN Eleen is skilled in using oil painting as a creative media. Her works mostly investigate the changes and chaotic phenomenon brought about by modern culture, recording the loss and disappearance of various cultural elements and traditions. The Pond illustrates an octagonal pond with Chinese scholars’ rocks. In addition to people leaning against the fence looking at the pond, a girl is also shown naughtily using a net to fish for pond animals. Ponds, which were once traditional gathering places in Taiwanese villages, have gradually lost their importance due to rural-urban migration and western cultural influences. The floating Sponge Bob balloon has become the center of modern children’s culture. Cultural mixing and the disappearance of cultural boundaries are illustrated by the electric cables hanging in the sky, oddly entwined with the rocks in the pond.
