CHIU Yong-Jin is a skilled eastern gouache painter, and most of his works centered on daily traveling experiences, identifying and reassembling symbols from everyday life. Sunmoon Lake has a narrow, vertical composition with four-fifths of the picture depicting a shore covered with gold-colored gravel and the remaining depicting the azure lake, forming a monotonous backdrop that highlights the small white boat at the bottom. Sun Moon Lake is a famous destination in Central Taiwan and is known for its lakeside landscape. The artist deliberately exaggerated the dimensional perspectives and reversed general conventions where the lake must dominate the picture. As a native of Nantou, CHIU Yong-Jin has a special emotional connection with the Lake. His map-like illustration has converted his personal emotions into symbols housed within a re-assembled landscape that he can truly call his own.
