CHI Lien was born in Kaohsiung and has over 20 years of experience. In addition to using his brush to depict the beauty of nature, he expresses his inner emotions with great feeling through his work. In Sense and Sensibility 4 the artist combines mixed media with the ""automatic"" technique to create a ""conflicting aesthetic"" of both ""sense"" and ""sensibility."" Against a basic background of gray/black/white, the artist piles up a great many layers of color creating a rich surface texture. He then goes on to use the ""automatic"" technique, randomly applying color by splashing and dripping, to show a contrast of a relaxed and a tense ambiance by deliberately putting a ready-made circuit board into the picture. The bold and unrestrained feeling of the painting is reflected in the overall composition of the ""sense,"" or ""rational space,"" creating a visual language of dual contrast, and it is also the goal of the artist--to create the ""sensibility"" in the ""rational"" space.
