Much of the subject matter of LIU Zi-Ping’s art comes from his life experience. His more recent work further reflects a shift toward themes of environmental destruction and change. His piece Fission II is a color woodblock print incorporating a variety of folk and modern symbols and exploring the relationship between human civilization and the environment from ancient times to today. Central to the image is a newborn baby, helplessly enclosed in a turbid, womb-like world, an umbilical cord connecting the baby to life-giving oceans and forests in the outside world, thus describing our state of survival in this world. By means of this unique composition, Liu depicts an individual human being’s connection to the cosmos, calling on the viewer to think about humanity’s struggles and conflicts in its ongoing relationship with the environment.
