HSU Chieh excels at making relief woodcut prints and coloring them in plain black and white. The Unknown Instant is presented as a pair of paintings. Here the artist combines fine and coarse lines, dense and loose spacing, intaglio and high relief to depict huge waves with spraying foam, rain violently pouring down, and jumping, flying fish who have lost all their flesh. With this the artist depicts the tumultuous mental agitation one feels in the real world in living together with others. At the intersection of blade point and wood block, with each cut Hsu makes a record of the course of his own life, turning time and energy into an artistic creation, thus sorting out his thoughts and exploring the world of the inner spirit.
