HSU Chieh excels at making relief woodcut prints and coloring them in plain black and white. The visual focal point of Choice is a drooping hand. The complex image at the top of the painting and the empty white space at the bottom form a contrast, expressing the idea of a psychological conflict between not wanting to let go and the necessity of doing so. The semi-circle form protruding from the picture symbolizes the brain, independent of the chaos. The artist here is attempting to convey the idea that man’s happiness and sadness is completely a “choice” he makes in his own mind. At the intersection of blade point and wood block, with each cut Hsu makes a record of the course of his own life, turning time and energy into an artistic creation, thus sorting out his thoughts and exploring the world of the inner spirit.
