HSU Chieh excels at making relief woodcut prints and coloring them in plain black and white. In Illusion woodblock prints intertwine and spiral on the canvass as abstract shapes, pressing down upon people below wearing heavy armor. Complex ornamentation creates a confusing visual sense and an anxious atmosphere. The circular shape protruding from the picture symbolizes the brain, as if detached and observing the chaos in the painting. The artist here depicts the past, which lingers in the mind. At the intersection of blade point and wood block, with each cut Hsu makes a record of the course of his own life, turning time and energy into an artistic creation, thus sorting out his thoughts and exploring the world of the inner spirit.
