Artist Lin Hou-Cheng’s photographic practice consistently revolves around the themes of loneliness and memory. In his work, Boundless Realm, withered trees and buildings loom in clusters of two or three, or standing alone, across a vast snowy plain, conveying a powerful sense of isolation. The first and last frames depict night scenes, while the four central frames depict snowy landscapes during the day. The lens’s focal length shifts with distance, resembling a film storyboard, allowing the viewer to experience the flow of time from night to day and back again. Lin Hou-Cheng traveled alone to Hokkaido, Japan, one winter, braving frigid temperatures to photograph snowy scenes. He transformed the physical sensations of the extreme climate into a meditation on “presence.” Using long exposure techniques, he eliminated all signs of life from the image, creating a tension between recording and disappearance, leading viewers to reflect on the contradictory nature of photography as a medium of memory.
